Understanding the Process

What Is a DOT SAP Evaluation?

If you've tested positive for drugs or alcohol — or refused a DOT-mandated test — federal law requires you to complete a Substance Abuse Professional evaluation before returning to any safety-sensitive position. This includes commercial truck driving, aviation, rail, transit, pipeline, and maritime roles.

Only a federally-qualified SAP listed on the DOT's approved provider network can complete this process. Bonnie Mucklow is a fully-qualified SAP serving the Denver area, ready to guide you through every step.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is required to complete a DOT SAP evaluation?
Any employee in a DOT-regulated safety-sensitive position who tests positive, refuses a test, or otherwise violates DOT drug & alcohol policies — including CDL drivers, bus operators, aviation workers, pipeline employees, and railroad workers.
Can I return to work before the process is complete?
No. Federal law prohibits employers from allowing a safety-sensitive employee to return to duty until the full SAP process — initial evaluation, recommended program, and follow-up evaluation — is completed and RTD clearance is issued.
How long does the entire SAP process take?
The initial evaluation can typically be scheduled the same week you call. After completing your recommended program (ranging from a few days to several weeks), you'll schedule a follow-up evaluation with Bonnie to receive your RTD clearance.
Is the SAP evaluation covered by insurance?
SAP services are generally not covered by insurance and are paid out-of-pocket. We are transparent about fees upfront — contact us before your appointment to discuss current fees and payment options.
Is what I share with the SAP kept confidential?
Yes. Your evaluation is confidential under HIPAA and DOT regulations. The only information provided to your employer or MRO is whether you are eligible to return to duty — not clinical details from your sessions.
Do you offer telehealth SAP evaluations?
Yes — Bonnie offers both in-person appointments at her Denver office and telehealth sessions for eligible clients. Contact us to confirm that telehealth meets your specific employer and MRO requirements before booking.
